This project involved the demolition of the existing Nykerk Hall of Music to make way for a new LEED Gold Student Center named after Hope College’s past President Jim Bultman and his wife Martie. The work includes significant utility relocation and demolition. The new building has many defining features that were refined throughout design development.

The college’s dean of students, Dr. Richard Frost, noted that the center has been designed with an emphasis on integrating the three central components of the Hope experience–academics, faith and student life—and to provide space for activities and interaction not currently available elsewhere.

A large, multi-purpose room with links to an adjacent patio provide space for a variety of program possibilities. A family lounge with picture windows provide space to socialize, watch television or bask by the soothing fireplace. A theatre will host long-running student film series, guest speakers and music practices. A small prayer chapel provides a place to worship and reflect on God. Multiple student organizations will have offices and shared space for working on
projects. The building also has an exciting state-of-the-art food and coffee area.

The Jim and Martie Bultman Student Center is located adjacent to the DeWitt Student and Cultural Center, which opened in 1971. The new building supports Hope’s student-life program, which has grown substantially since 1971 as enrollment has increased from 2,101 students 40 years ago to more than 3,200 currently.
