In 2014 Granger Construction completed a major addition and upgrade project at Michigan State University Munn Ice Arena. At this time, Munn Ice Arena was still operating with its original ice plant and heating and ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. However, these systems had reached the end of their useful lives and needed to be replaced.

Michigan State selected Granger to manage construction of a 4,000 SF ice plant addition on the northeastern corner of their existing facility. This plant would house new refrigeration equipment, including chillers, screw compressors, evaporative condensers and associated equipment. This ammonia-based system would provide a premium quality ice sheet and serve as a redundancy in case of equipment failure.

The MSU Munn Ice Arena addition and renovation also allowed for the following new features:

  • Space for television broadcast trucks to park at an adjacent position near the building to connect broadcast systems and support televising of games
  • New heating/cooling piping
  • Replaced ice rink slabs
  • A more modern dasher board system
  • more transparent and safer glass panels around the rink
  • two new chillers to better control the arena's indoor air quality
