Constructed in 1967, the nearly 175,000 square-foot five-building complex (Baits II) provides housing for approximately 560 first-year students in single or double rooms and suites. This renovation project involved updating infrastructure and interior finishes including:
- Refurbished bathrooms and renovated house kitchens.
- Upgraded fire alarm and suppression systems
- Wireless internet
- New student room flooring
- Remodeled Community Learning Center and updated lounges
- Home movie theater and art studio
- Nine music practice rooms and performance area
- Community living room with kitchenette
Sustainable feature of this project included:
- New roofing with insulating values between R21 and R40
- New aluminum windows with 1-inch, double-pane insulated glazing, thermal breaks and special coatings
- New energy-efficient light fixtures with occupancy sensors
- New toilet fixture with water-saving 1.6 gpf and dual-action flush valves
- New plumbing faucets and shower heads with water-saving features
- New energy-efficient and paper-saving electric hand dryers
- New energy-efficient kitchen appliances and computers
- Use of salvaged existing student furniture from other U-M dormitories
- Use of new flooring with recycled content, low-VOC emissions and regionally-produced material
