Corewell Health

This highly complex project involved renovating administrative office space into a new
Hematology & Oncology Clinic on the second floor of Corewell Health’s 35 Michigan
building, situated along the Medical Mile in downtown Grand Rapids.

Key Features:

  • Pediatric infusion bays
  • Private infusion rooms
  • Exam rooms
  • Procedure/sedation rooms
  • Clinical work areas
  • A new pharmacy for sterile hazardous and non-hazardous compounding
  • Infill of an existing two-story atrium/lobby space

Prior to this project starting, the team completed extensive make-ready work to create swing space to accommodate the occupants moving out of the second floor to make way for this new clinic.

During typical hospital renovations, existing infrastructure—such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems—can often be leveraged to support the new space. However, because the area was previously used for administrative offices, it lacked much of the essential MEP infrastructure required for a clinical setting. Granger provided the infrastructure to support these systems, and helped coordinate their installation, which included medical gas, hazardous exhaust, steam, nurse call/code blue and a synchronized clock system.

Creative phasing and communication were critical to this project’s success. Based on previous work within the hospital, Granger’s deep understanding of the needs of the
client and end users paid dividends in developing a phasing plan that met the needs of the clinical staff and maintained patient safety and comfort.
