Granger Construction provided design-build services to Metropolitan Detroit Area Hospital Services (MDAHS) for a new medical laundry facility. MDAHS is a joint venture is between Henry Ford Health System, Michigan Medicine and St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
One of the largest of its kind, this centralized laundry service facility was built to help MDAHS achieve efficiencies, saving between $400,000 and $500,000 a year and spurring economic renewal in the region. It employs about 150 staff, including 75 additional hires, and can accommodate up to 78 million pounds of healthcare linens annually (about four times the previous capacity).
This project involved 59,000 SF of renovations and 56,000 SF of additions. Granger also demolished the second floor of the existing building to provide necessary ceiling height.
About half the project budget went toward specialized equipment and automated technology, including, an overhead monorail systems for transporting linen around the warehouse, tunnel washers and dryers, lint collection systems and finishing stations.
The high-efficiency equipment greatly reduces utility consumption and emissions. The new facility also features other sustainability initiatives in its design, including recycled materials and environmentally-friendly cleaning products. A waste water heat reclamation system was installed to reduce natural gas consumption (capturing heat from waste water and using it to preheat fresh water during the washing process).
Through collaboration and implementation of Lean practices, the team achieved early equipment delivery, MEP trades access and equipment installation, creating more time for commissioning and testing.
