Oakland University acquired an existing higher education building approximately 1.5 miles away from their main campus to house the School of Nursing, the School of Health Sciences and a new basketball practice facility. Granger Construction led the charge on this occupied renovation project to address deferred maintenance, fully sprinkle the building, reconfigure rooms and other spaces as needed, bring the kitchen facility online and update the finishes in the facility.
Phase 1 one of the project involved reconfiguring spaces on the first and second floors for the Nursing and Health Sciences classroom and laboratory spaces. Phase 2 of this project involved constructing a new Varsity Basketball Training Center to improve the competitive and recruiting opportunities for the university’s basketball programs and bring them more in line with their Division 1 peers.
This portion of the project required the renovation of a large, double-height room previously used for student events to create the regulation-size practice gymnasium. The adjacent existing kitchen/cafeteria area was remodeled for the new locker rooms, team rooms, trainer’s office and trainer’s room. On the second floor, an existing office suite was converted for the athletics offices, with a new film room created adjacent to the office suite.
This new facility will help elevate and enhance student-athlete experiences and position the OU programs on a more even level with its Horizon League and other regional peers for recruiting purposes.
