Ann Arbor Fire Station 4

City of Ann Arbor

Granger was selected to construct a new state-of-the-art net-zero fire station that will accommodate fire and emergency response vehicles, equipment and services for the
next 50 years.

This project will replace the existing fire station built in 1966, which will be demolished to make room for the new station. Rebuilding Fire Station 4 at its current location avoids land acquisition costs and provides an opportunity for site enhancements to the adjoining Scheffler Park. The new facility will feature apparatus bays for vehicles, residential areas and sleeping quarters, a small gymnasium for recreation, a full kitchen and spaces for administration, maintenance and storage. This new fire station will be the first net-zero Fire Station in Michigan, and the city’s first carbon-neutral facility. The new net-zero Station 4 will align with the city’s A2Zero sustainability goals, featuring an energy-efficient design and producing its own energy through solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling.

Beyond aligning with the city’s carbon neutrality goals, the project will accommodate today’s needs for more inclusive spaces in terms of showering, bathrooms and
sleeping quarters. The new fire station will also provide safer sleeping spaces, with separation from “hot zones” where carcinogen-covered turnout gear and equipment are stored.
