A Mindset that Builds: Kevin Bywalec’s Path to Project Excellence

For the past seven years, Kevin Bywalec has been bringing a strong builder’s mindset to every project at Granger Construction. Known for clear communication and a hands-on approach, Kevin has established himself as a valued project manager who takes pride in delivering thoughtful, well-coordinated work.

Growing up, Kevin was drawn to construction equipment and the way buildings come together. That early curiosity led him to major in architecture at Bowling Green State University. But as he spent more time around construction management students, he realized he wanted to play a more active, boots‑on‑the‑ground role in the building process. He soon added a second major in construction management, a decision that ultimately shaped his career path.

Kevin graduated from BGSU in 2019 with a B.S. in Architecture and a B.S. in Construction Management before joining Granger full-time, after a previous summer internship. That blend of design and construction continues to influence how he works today.

“With my architectural background, I feel I can understand the details, elevations, section cuts and the architect’s intent better when faced with a question from the trades,” Kevin shared. “I enjoy reviewing details with the trades to problem solve.”

Since joining Granger, Kevin has embraced every opportunity to learn. His architectural training gives him a strong understanding of drawings and design intent, while his time working with Granger’s self‑perform crews helped to strengthen his practical foundation.

“I learned so much when I had the opportunity to work with Paul Carignan and the Granger self-perform crews,” he said. “By working alongside that team, I was able to gain insider knowledge about concrete, surveying, elevations and door hardware. All these different experiences have helped push me to be better and approach every issue with a builder’s mindset.”

Kevin’s dedication has been evident across every project he touches, but the Padnos Shredder project in Howell, MI stands out as a personal favorite.

“That was my favorite project and favorite team to work with,” Kevin shared. “It was a great mix of Construction Management and Granger Self Perform on a one‑of‑a‑kind project for a scrap yard. We were honored to win the 2023 Michigan Concrete Association Award for Structural Concrete.”

Granger Vice President Ben Schneider praised Kevin for his deep understanding of the industry and his unwavering commitment. “He’s tenacious about details and enjoys getting a little mud on his boots to find the solution,” Schneider said.

For Kevin, that hands‑on approach at Granger is what makes the work meaningful. “It is so rewarding to see what was once a barren piece of land become a building constructed out of natural resources and crafted by skilled tradesmen.”
