Dave McAlvey: A Career Defined by Quiet Leadership

While Dave McAlvey’s technical expertise and project leadership are widely recognized, he would tell you that the people he learned from—and learned alongside—matter far more than any title or accomplishment. Over more than four decades at Granger, Dave built a career rooted in accountability, patience, and a deep respect for teamwork.

Dave credits many individuals for shaping his professional path. Each influenced him differently, but all shared a commitment to teaching, responsibility, and doing the job the right way. Dave carried those lessons forward, serving as a steady mentor and trusted presence whose calm leadership helped teams succeed, even in the most complex situations.

Reflecting on his career, Dave often comes back to two lessons: patience and perseverance. Construction, like life, rarely rewards shortcuts. Progress comes from showing up consistently, working through uncertainty, and staying engaged even when outcomes aren’t immediate.

One lesson Dave continues to carry with him into retirement is the value of learning from others. He is quick to say that no matter how experienced you become, you are always surrounded by people who know something you don’t. “When you stop learning, it’s time to leave,” Dave once remarked, a belief that reflects both his humility and his lifelong curiosity.

When asked how he hopes to be remembered, Dave’s answer is characteristically modest. He jokes that there’s plenty about him he hopes people forget, but what he truly hopes is that people saw him as a teammate they could count on.

Dave never tried to be the smartest person in the room. Instead, he focused on doing his job well so others could do theirs even better. He believed that success was less about recognition and more about responsibility – taking care of the work so the team could move forward with confidence.

That same humility shapes how Dave views his contributions to Granger. He has described himself simply as “a maintenance man” doing his part so the company could succeed. In reality, it was precisely those steady, behind‑the‑scenes contributions made consistently over decades that helped anchor some of the company’s most complex and successful projects.

Above all else, Dave is grateful for the people he worked with and the opportunities he was given. His career spanned estimating, project management, and leadership across an unusually broad range of markets, including prisons, hospitals, K‑12, higher education, water and wastewater, municipal, financial, and industrial projects. He valued the diversity of that experience and the trust Granger placed in him by never pigeonholing him into a single role or sector.

Looking back, Dave feels fortunate to have built his entire career at Granger. More than milestones or metrics, what endures for him are the relationships formed, the problems solved together, and the opportunity to quietly support others’ success.

“Dave is a rock, someone people can rely on,” said Granger CEO Glenn Granger. “Not only is he an extremely smart engineer, but he has unparalleled integrity. People like Dave are the foundation of Granger’s success, and his legacy will continue to influence the company for years to come.”

In a career spanning more than forty years, Dave McAlvey proved that patience, humility, and consistency still matter. His legacy is not defined by recognition or accolades, but by trust earned, teams strengthened, and an enduring example of what it means to be a truly great teammate. As he prepares for his well-earned retirement on May 1, we proudly celebrate Dave’s 41 years at Granger and the impact he has had on our projects, our people, and our company.
