Women In Construction Week – Nikki Corkwell

For nearly a decade, Nikki Corkwell has been bringing a steady, service‑driven mindset to her work at Granger. Known for her adaptability and genuine commitment to helping others succeed, Nikki has become a valued member of any team she is on.

Nikki joined Granger in 2017 after working in municipal finance. Encouraged by a friend to apply, she stepped into Granger’s Accounting Department with a strong sense of structure and compliance, skills that translated naturally to construction accounting. As she settled into her role, Nikki discovered that the industry’s unique terms and processes sparked a deeper curiosity.

“What changed my approach is realizing that even though the language and workflows are different, the foundation is still numbers—and that’s something that genuinely motivates me. Once I understood the “why” behind the construction terms, everything clicked. It reminded me that I can adapt to anything as long as I stay curious and ask questions.”

In 2023, Nikki made a pivotal shift and joined the Construction Services department at Granger as a Project Coordinator. The move allowed her to support the team through bid submissions while continuing to use her accounting background, blending the best of both worlds.

“Throughout my career, the skills I value and rely on most are those that enable me to support others and keep teams running smoothly. I naturally gravitate toward being a “utility player”—someone who can jump in wherever needed—so both technical and personal strengths play a big role in how I contribute,” she explained.

What drives her most are the personal qualities she brings to the work: empathy, teamwork and service.

“Being organized, adaptable, and service-oriented matters, but the most important qualities I bring are empathy and a strong sense of teamwork. At my core, I’m motivated by helping people.  Empathy allows me to anticipate needs, offer support before someone has to ask, and build trust across the team.”

Since stepping into her current role, Nikki has embraced opportunities to grow her understanding of the construction process. Her highly competitive spirit makes bid days especially rewarding.

“What truly makes me proud, especially since I am a highly competitive person, is seeing our team win a bid and witnessing the smile on the estimators’ faces! In those moments, I know that the accuracy, care and behind-the-scenes work I put into the process played a meaningful role in that success. Contributing to the overall achievements of Granger brings me a sense of joy and fulfillment that reinforces why I love the work I do.”

Nikki’s dedication shines across every project she supports. From learning new bidding platforms to adapting quickly to changing requirements, she consistently finds meaning in the details that help her team perform their best.

“I GET to go to work,” she said. “It’s a privilege to be part of a team where I’m surrounded by hardworking, dedicated people who make every day enjoyable. We challenge one another in the best ways, creating an environment that pushes me to grow. I’m better because of the support, collaboration and shared commitment to doing things the right way. Being part of a team that inspires me daily is one of the biggest reasons I’m proud to be here.”

Nikki’s colleagues consistently describe her as someone who brings equal parts positivity and reliability to every task. Known for her can‑do attitude, she never hesitates to jump in and support the team.

“Nikki has been an incredible addition to our General Contracting team,” said Granger Vice President of Construction Services, Jerrod Pung. “She does a phenomenal job of juggling accounting functions in addition to her bid coordinator responsibilities.  I appreciate her can-do attitude and willingness to dive in and help with any problem.  Beyond her effectiveness and professionalism, she brings energy and enthusiasm to our team that makes work (even estimating) fun.”

If she could offer one piece of advice to her younger self, Nikki said:

“(I would) remind myself to slow down enough to appreciate the little things, because they’re often the moments that matter most. And I’d encourage myself to celebrate often; the small wins, the personal growth, and the everyday joys that are easy to overlook. Trust the process, learn from every season, and keep moving forward with gratitude.”
